Whether your goal is to become fluent in French or to simply learn the basics before heading off to France, our beginners' course is the perfect place to start. If you are an absolute beginner or perhaps you already know a smattering of French, forget the usual phrase book and join our French for Beginners course right here on the Central Coast!

Chances are you’re already au fait with a number of French phrases and words, but this fun and interactive course will delve deeper into the language, exploring reading and pronunciation, basic listening comprehension and simple grammar, including sentence structure, asking and answering questions, verbs and tense.

The French for Beginners course covers a wide range of topics, such as introduction, family, professions, location, grocery shopping, directions and travelling. By graduation it is expected that all students will be able to have a basic conversation in French, discussing similar topics as covered in class.

Course Duration

This course runs one day per week for the duration of 9 weeks.

Learning Outcomes

  • Introduce yourself and other people in the group.
  • Address someone using the appropriate levels of formality.
  • Provide personal information about yourself and others.
  • Spell and pronounce your name in French.
  • Ask another person for their personal information.
  • Say numbers in French and use them in context.
  • Express yourself, such as what you like and dislike, etc.
  • Interact with others using language structures for classroom communication.

Study Pathways

Graduates may continue their studies by enrolling in the French for Intermediate course.

Please bring a pen and exercise book to class.

Students are also required to purchase the following textbook prior to class commencement:
BBC, The French Experience 1 (ISBN 9781406678475).

Textbooks can be ordered through The Co-op Bookshop, located here on campus. Phone: 02 4362 2796 for information regarding costs and order times. In the event that Central Coast Community College is unable to deliver this course due to unforeseen circumstances or minimum numbers not being reached, students will be offered a full refund for the required textbook purchased from the Co-op Bookshop provided the book is returned in good condition to the Co-op Bookshop within 10 days from notification of the course being cancelled. About The Trainer

Bonjour! My name is Sophie Macherel-Gredt and I look forward to teaching you French. A little bit about my background- born in Luxembourg I am a native French speaker and I grew up, studied and worked in several French-speaking countries amongst which Luxembourg, France and Switzerland. French is one of the very few languages spoken all over the world and is an official language of 29 countries; there are currently over 220 million French speakers worldwide. I have been a French tutor at the Central Coast Community College for over 15 years and I am passionate about sharing my language and culture with adult learners. One of the most rewarding aspects of teaching is to see my students' developing skills of understanding and speaking a new language. So come along, try the ‘language of romance’ or improve your current skills in a fun and relaxed atmosphere!
