Tech Savvy Seniors Online Live Workshops

Tech Savvy Seniors is an initiative of the NSW Ageing Strategy and is funded through a partnership between the NSW Government and Telstra.

Classes are FREE for participants aged 60 years and over across NSW and are delivered by the Central Coast Community College.

During May and June we will be running a series of live workshops online using the Zoom video conferencing system.

Please note that there are only 8 positions available within each workshop for student enrolments.

What Do You Need?

You will need either a computer, a smartphone or a tablet/iPad with an internet connection. Unless you are using a desktop computer, your device will already have a camera and microphone built in.

Please note that you will need to have enough data available via your internet connection, if you are connected to your home wifi this will not be an issue If you are using mobile data you can expect to use approximately 100Mb per hour which is not much

Students will also be required to download the Zoom app. The details for joining the Zoom meeting will be emailed to you once you have enrolled.

About Your Trainer

Steve has worked in technology and education for over 25 years as a teacher, trainer, technician and consultant. Steve is passionate about the way that technology can empower people of all ages to stay informed, connected and productive.

Introduction to Tablets: Android: Wednesday May 27th - 2pm to 4pm

In this workshop, we’ll walk you through:

  • The hardware and basic interface of a tablet
  • Touchscreens and gestures
  • Settings, security and updates
  • Installing and using apps such as games, web browser, communications tools and more.

Managing Digital Assets: Monday June 1st - 2pm until 4pm

A digital asset is any information about you, or what belongs to you, that’s stored on a phone, computer or online. Digital assets, such as photographs, are important and potentially very valuable. This workshop will focus on:

  • How to manage online accounts & passwords
  • How to use cloud storage
  • How to store assets like Photographs securely

 

Introduction to Apple Mac Computers: Wednesday June 3rd - 2pm until 4pm

This workshop will focus on the basics of using an Apple Mac computer so you will need to have one of these available during the workshop. We will cover:

  • Navigating the desktop
  • Opening & using Applications
  • Working with the Finder
  • Searching for files & apps
  • Adjusting your settings
  • Security & updates

Introduction to Social Media: Tuesday June 9th - 2pm until 4pm

Social media sites like Facebook let you see what’s happening in the lives of friends and allows you to let them know what’s going on in yours.

This workshop will include:

  • A summary of the different social media platforms available
  • How to create a Facebook Account
  • How to control the privacy and security of your account
  • How to share and create posts
  • How to communicate using Facebook Messenger

Introduction to Online Shopping: Wednesday June 10th - 2pm until 4pm

Unsure how to navigate buying groceries online? We’ll walk you through the process of buying something online, and you will also learn how to stay safe online for banking and shopping.

This workshop will include:

  • How to search for and research goods and services online
  • Tips for buying online safely and securely
  • How to pay online
  • How to pay bills online
  • How to bank online

Introduction to Smartphones Apple iPhone: Monday June 15th - 2pm until 4pm

This workshop is for people who own an Apple iPhone and want to learn the basics.

This workshop will include:

  • How to use a touch screen
  • How to make a phone call
  • How to make changes to your iPhone’s settings
  • How to manage your Apple ID and iCloud
  • How to use built in apps like contacts and calendar
  • How to find and install apps
  • How to manage updates

Introduction to Smartphones Android: Wednesday June 17th - 2pm until 4pm

This workshop is for people who own an Android smartphone, such as a Samsung and want to learn the basics.

This workshop will include:

  • How to use a touch screen
  • How to make a phone call
  • How to make changes to your smartphone’s settings
  • How to manage your Google Account and the Google cloud
  • How to use built in apps like contacts and calendar
  • How to find and install apps
  • How to manage updates

Introduction to Cyber Safety: Monday June 22nd - 2pm until 4pm

If you are worried about staying safe online and want to understand & recognise the threats the internet might present this workshop is for you.

This workshop will include:

  • The threats you might face
  • How to protect yourself online
  • The role security software plays
  • What to do if you get scammed
