Hello! I'm Kate.

Small business money coach, Chartered Accountant, and owner of small business financial literacy company Valkyrie Enterprises.

I am passionate about small business owners understanding their business financials and optimising their businesses for success. A key part of being a successful business owner is understanding your business financially. Join me for online workshops where we discuss all things money and business!

Are You Eligible?

The Targeted Skills for Small Business Program will deliver targeted short workshops for small business owners and employees of small businesses who want to better understand how to use the latest technology to improve their business operations. Click here to see a full range of Tech Savvy for Small Business workshops on offer at the College.

You may be eligible for Targeted Skills for Small Business funding if you are:

  • 15 years old or over, and
  • no longer at school, and
  • living or working in NSW (or an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person living in specific NSW border areas), and
  • an Australian citizen; or a permanent Australian resident; or a New Zealand citizen; or a humanitarian visa holder or a partner visa holder whose sponsor is a humanitarian visa holder.

To be eligible for subsided training under this Program you must be:

  • Be an owner or employee of a small business with less than 20 employees, or
  • Turn over less than $2 million annually.

This funding is subsidised by the NSW Government.

Each workshop will be delivered face to face by an industry expert trainer.

You will also have the option of an additional 1 hour one to one Zoom session, booked directly with the trainer, to focus on your business.

Each workshop will be limited to 10 students, and you must enrol to participate.

TSB - Xero for Business

Start Date: TBC

Course Times: TBC

Xero for Business will assist small business owners and employees in using the cloud based Xero accounting software to manage and monitor their finances in real time.

Topics Covered:

  • Customise invoice and email settings
  • Manage contacts
  • Set up Products and Services
  • Utilise the Xero File Storage system
  • Process and manage transactions such as sales invoices, bills and expense receipts and money transfers
  • Produce financial reports so that you can make informed decisions about your business growth including GST reporting.
  • Reconcile your bank accounts and make sure that they balance with your bank statement, ensuring your cash flow is on track

Xero For Business will lead you through the basic functions of Xero helping you maximise revenue, profits and cash flow.

What to Bring To Class?

Please bring your own laptop. A limited number of loan laptops will be available. If you require one of these please call the College and let us know when you enrol. Wireless internet access will be available.

TSB - Xero Payroll for Business

Start Date: TBC

Do you manage the payroll for a small business? Xero Payroll for Business will prepare payroll personnel and small business owners to attain a stronger command of the various functions of the Payroll module in Xero.

Topics Covered:

Record payroll data in Xero

  • Check payroll data and clarify discrepancies
  • Enter employee pay period details and any deductions and allowances
  • Calculate payment due to individual employees

Prepare payroll in Xero

  • Prepare payroll within designated timelines
  • Reconcile total wages for pay period, check or correct irregularities
  • Make arrangements for payment to employees
  • Obtain authorisation of payroll and individual pay advice
  • Produce, check and store payroll records
  • Follow security procedures for processing payroll and for maintaining payroll records

Handle payroll enquiries in Xero

  • Respond to payroll enquiries
  • Provide information regarding enquiries
  • Ensure all enquiries outside area of responsibility and Knowledge, are referred to designated persons for resolution
  • Complete additional information or follow-up action within designated timelines

TSB - How to make money in your small business

Start Date: Monday 28 February 2022

Course Times: 9am - 12pm

This course is designed for business owners who are ready to grow their business. This course provides business owners with pricing strategies for their products and services, information on various payment services and the importance of cashflow management, as well as provides practical information and tips on how to communicate consistent price increases to their customers. This course also details different strategies on how to grow business revenue through diversification and passive income.

Topics Covered:

  • How to price your products and services
  • How to communicate price increases to your customers
  • Invoicing basics and ways to automate so you get paid faster
  • The importance of cashflow management, and how to smooth out your cashflow
  • Different types of payment services, and what impact they can have on your business (including payment services like AfterPay and ZipPay)
  • Strategies to grow your business through diversification and passive income.

TSB - Finance Basics for Sole Traders

Start Date: Monday 14 March 2022

Course Times: 9am - 12pm

This course is designed specifically for sole traders who would like to improve their knowledge and skills around running their sole trader business successfully. This course will give small business owners the knowledge of how to pay themselves consistently, budgeting basics for small businesses, the importance of superannuation, when to register for GST (and other taxes) as well as strategies to achieve business growth.

  • How to know if you are operating a business, or if it is just a hobby
  • When should you register for GST?
  • How to pay yourself superannuation
  • How to pay yourself a wage
  • Budgeting basics for small business growth
  • Why documentation and recording keeping are important
  • Strategies to grow your business
  • Things to consider when changing into a different business structure

TSB - Cashflow and Budgeting for Small Business

Start Date: Monday 28 March 2022

Course Times: 9am - 12pm

Ensuring your business is equipped to navigate times of uncertainty will ensure that your business continues to thrive. This short course is designed for business owners who would like to learn how to read and implement the information that financial statements provide, as well as develop skills around budgeting, setting income targets, and ensuring that cashflow is not a problem. This course also provides business owners with strategies on how to pay themselves consistently to reduce the stress involved with running a business.

Topics covered:

  • Learn how to read financial statements (Profit & Loss Report, Balance Sheet & Cashflow Statement) and understand the impact of these statements on business
  • Budgeting for expenditure
  • Setting income targets
  • How to pay yourself consistently as a business owner
  • How to stay on top of your cashflow
